Australian Vogue

Jade from the label Arnsdorf talks to Nina for Australian Vogue.

Nina and I met at Capsule a few years ago. We were both wearing colour-blocked pastels – I was dressed in a lilac shirt and high waisted lilac jeans, while Nina wore a pale moss green shirtdress. We have been friends ever since.

Nina Elgi is the designer behind jewellery line Toujours Toi and along with her mother, Kaya Egli, designs fashion label Family Affairs.  Kaya was a designer in Zurich in the 1970s, later becoming the in-house designer for The Beatles’ iconic Apple shop in London. Family Affairs garments take much of their inspiration from this rich history, and the duo operate via a transatlantic design dialogue with Kaya based in Switzerland and Nina in New York.

Each season, Nina sends a parcel from New York of visual inspiration – ideas, fabrics, colours and shapes – across the seas to Kaya and the conversation starts. They then delve into Kaya’s archive collection to pull out designs and rework them to fit with the nostalgic yet contemporary aesthetic of Family Affairs.

Nina works from her Brooklyn studio overlooking the most beautiful tree branches. It feels as through you are in a magical treehouse or perhaps the woods in her homeland. I love seeing other people’s creative workspaces and getting a sense of how they work. Nina’s eye extends to little arrangements and objects all around the studio, such as the intricate mood boards that hang on the walls to inspire her designs.

Today she is waiting for a shipment of new stock to arrive so she can send it to her stockists, which include Opening Ceremony in New York and boutiques in Japan, Paris and Switzerland, before she heads to Paris for sales appointments. The latest Family Affairs samples from the new ‘Phone Home’ collection hang on a rack. This season, inspiration comes in the form of an appreciation of the strangeness of the late 70s and early 80s and the darkness of suburbia represented in the film E.T.

Deine Mutter lebt in der Schweiz, Du in New York. Wie funktioniert da die Zusammenarbeit? Wer macht was?

Momentan bin ich auch in der Schweiz und wir besprechen gerade gemeinsam unsere Frühlingskollektion 2013: welche Formen und Längen wir wollen und welche Inspirationen wir haben. Der Weg zum Prototyp ist dann mit viel Arbeit verbunden, denn meine Mutter kreiert alle Muster von Hand. Ich wähle die Stoffe aus. Dabei ziehe ich mich gerne zurück. Ich bespreche dann die Stoffauswahl mit meiner Mutter - wir kommunizieren viel per Skype, per E-Mail und mit Fotos. Und erst wenn der Stoff auch wirklich zum Kleid passt, lassen wir einen Prototyp machen.

Was bringt und hält Dich eigentlich in New York?

Kurzum: New York macht mich glücklich. Ich liebe den blauen Himmel hier, meine Freunde, meine Wohnung… So viele Dinge! Ursprünglich brachte mich die Schauspielerei hierher. Ich war Tänzerin und Schauspielerin und kam 2002, um am Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute zu studieren. Heute produzieren wir einen Teil der Toujours Toi Family Affairs Kollektion hier und dadurch bin ich noch mehr mit der Stadt verwurzelt.

Wie kam es zu dem Namen für das Modelabel?

Ich erinnere mich noch ganz genau an die beiden Momente. Bei Toujours Toi sass ich an dem chaotischen Bürotisch meines Mitbewohners und musste einen Namen finden, da wir am nächsten Tag die Website machen wollten und da kam mir Toujours Toi in den Sinn. Ich habe es gegoogelt und siehe da: Es gab noch nichts unter dem Namen! Der Name Family Affairs fiel mir ein, als ich in einem Café in Brooklyn auf meine Schwester und meine beste Freundin wartete. Ich ass einen Cookie und schrieb verschiedene Namen auf die Serviette. Die Serviette habe ich immer noch.

Was möchtet ihr mit der aktuellen Kollektion vermitteln? 

Das Gefühl des perfekten Sommers, an den ich mich aus meiner Kindheit erinnere: an einem kleinen Strand in Griechenland mit ausgeblichenen Sonnenschirmen und einem Eis. Daraus entstanden Stücke, die zwar humorvoll sind, sich aber auch super als Ausgeh-Kleider eignen. Kleider mit denen man tanzen, Fahrrad fahren oder auch eine Yacht steuern kann…

Was findest Du an Deinem Beruf am spannendsten? Was am schlimmsten?

Ich liebe es, mit meiner Mutter eine neue Kollektion zu kreieren, mich in Stoffläden zu verlieren, die Fotoshoots für den Katalog zu organisieren und im Team zu arbeiten. Zudem liebe ich all die Städte und Menschen, die ich Dank dieser Arbeit kennenlerne. 

Am schlimmsten finde ich den permanenten Zeitdruck, und wenn es Produktionsprobleme gibt – und die gibt es in den verschiedensten Varianten – oder wenn Lieferungen im Zoll stecken bleiben. 

Welche Klamotten trägst Du selber am liebsten?

Ich trage jeden Tag ein Stück von Family Affairs, das ich manchmal mit einem Vintage Stück oder mit einem Stück eines befreundeten Designers kombiniere. Am unwiderstehlichsten sind für mich Kleider aus den 30er und 40er Jahren. Ich glaube, ich war in einem früheren Leben ein Showgirl in den 30ern.
